The shell is the turtles protector/house if someone threw a turtle it would go into its shell and the shell would hopefully protect it from the hard ground. A dimensioned drawing, artists impression or photograph requires little to no written notation to describe it. You can tell from a drawing of a box (for example) that it is a box and has X number of sides, Y number of corners and Z number of edges, is a certain colour and certain size etc. If you were to describe the box in words you would first need to know that whoever was reading the description could indeed i)read at all, ii)read YOUR handwriting, and iii)read in the same language as you. You would then have to define the box as a box and describe its shape, EG: "it is a perfect cube", or "its aspects are polygonal". You would add that it is either hollow or solid and that the sides are solid or that it is a spaceframe. Next you would need to define its colour and shade, or translucency. Finally you would have to describe its purpose and function, and detail how it completes this function. Example of written description: It is a box. It measures 300mm by 800mm by 500mm. It is hollow and has solid sides all round except for the top which is open. It is made of translucent and tinted blue glass in the shade of sapphire. It is for containing water and a small castle, in which a goldfish would live. It is waterproof along all its edges. If the above example was drawn as an artists impression, any reader regardless of their ability to read or understand your writing would instantly know what it was, without further explanation needed. Especially if it was drawn with the castle and goldfish in it! Simple answer: The two methods are similar in that they both convey a type of description of the object or item. They are dissimilar in the fact that the written description assumes certain conditions are met by the reader, and, that if poorly constructed can afford a great deal of misinterpretation as to what the object is and what purpose it serves. The written description begs a drawing but the drawing does not neccessarily require a description.
