The region that lies west of the coastal plains and extends from eastern Canada to western Alabama is the Appalachian Mountains. This mountain range features a series of peaks and valleys, playing a significant role in the geography and ecology of the eastern United States. Almost but not quite all of the USA is in the western hemisphere. There is a tiny,tiny, tiny part of Alaska that extends across the line into the eastern one.
