Early Church leaders knew that there was a literary relationship among the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke. They thought that the original of these gospels was Matthew, and that Mark and Luke were derived from it, with Mark's Gospel being a summary. Scholars now realise that Mark was the original New Testament gospel and that Matthew and Luke were derived from it.
