The Egyptians built temples because they believed that it was a house for the gods and goddesses. They really didn't use they them to pray in so what I said first was really the only reason why.
We don't really know who built the first ones, but we do know they were popular in ancient Egypt, where they were placed at the entrance of temples to show respect for the various gods.
They built them when they originally began to ocupy the area of the eastern Mediterranean three thousand years ago. At first they were built of wood, but in the mid 1st Millennium BCE they switched to stone. These stone temples were built in the Greek cities around the Mediterranean and Black Seas thereafter over the next millennium.
Roman temples were built for the gods. Each temple was dedicated to a god or goddess or to two or three related gods/goddesses. There was also the pantheon which was a kind of temple dedicated to all the gods. Religious rituals were performed at the temples. These varied according to the myths and traditions associated with the god or gods in question. They usually started with sacrifices to honour and pacify the god or gods and which also varied for the same reasons. If the god(s) were not honoured, this could cause their wrath.
The oldest known temple seems to be that found at Göbekli Tepe in southeastern Turkey, dating from the 10th millennium BC.
The Temple of Aphrodite was built in the first century B.C. for Aphrodite. The Temple of Aphrodite is still partially standing today and many people visit it each year.
