Most immigrants into Mexico during the 19th century were Europeans: Spanish, British, French, Germans, Irish, Italian and some Eastern Europeans. All of them immigrated into Mexico due to work-related reasons, or looking cheap lands offered by the Mexican government. A considerable ethnic Chinese population has been historically found in western Mexico, along the Pacific Ocean.
Since the 20th century, with the advent of the "Mexican economic miracle", most immigrants came from other Latin American countries, such as Guatemala, Colombia and Argentina. During the last half of the 20th century, a surge of Americans settled on northwestern Mexico and along the US-Mexico border.
Nowadays, from the ~1 million registered immigrants, approximately 76% are American nationals, followed by Guatemalans (4%) and Spaniards (2%).
