Device manager and Hardware Wizard
Unless it is a USB device or FireWire device or something similar, you should completely shut down the computer and the hardware, then plug the two together.
first we should see that the driver for that specific hardware has been installed or not. if it has been installed then go to the device manager right click on the harware, go to properties then click on rollback driver. if that doesn't work then see if any CD came with your harware device. if there is a CD then insert it and get the driver from there. if there is no CD then try to download the driver from the internet and install it. if none of these is possible go to your computer service center and ask him for the specific driver software.

You just have to keep pushing "cancel". You can also address the issue via the System Properties (Right click My Computer). Open the Hardware tab, click Device Manager, then find the driver in the list shown (whether it be for an mp3 player, camera, smartphone, ...) and right click>>Disable. This will keep the computer from trying to install the hardware drivers every time you plug in the device and /should/ allow you to use the device normally as an external drive (if that's the device's original functionality).
