yes, much better. it feels better in your hand, the internet is quicker, it includes 2 volume butons on the side, and has a much cleare screen,and it doesnt cost near as much. 230.00 vs. 300.00 for an 8g. the iPod touch 2nd generation also has an inbuilt speaker but at the moment ipod touch 2nd generation cant be jailbroken properly yet

It depends on the generation. If you seriously want to get an iPod Touch, then I would suggest getting the second generation or later. It is not worth it to buy the first generation at this point in time.
