There has been 57 inaugurations to date corresponding to the 57 presidential elections from 1788 to 2012. The five Presidents who never won a presidential election, Tyler, Fillmore, A. Johnson, Arthur and Ford, did not have a presidential inauguration.
Because with the exception of a very few presidential elections (Roosevelt versus Landon, Johnson versus Goldwater), most Presidential elections find Americans voting pretty close to 50/50. Extra votes that can be picked up by effective campaigning for swing voters and battleground (meaning virtually tied) states can make the difference.
Kentucky last voted for a Democratic presidential candidate in 1996 when it supported Bill Clinton's reelection bid. Since then, the state has consistently voted for Republican candidates in presidential elections.

Initially Lyndon Johnson sought re-election but he realized that that was not popular so he had Hubert Humphrey run. Bobby Kennedy got into the race late. Richard Nixon was the Republican candidate.
