In an electrical socket, there are three holes. One is a hot wire, one is a neutral wire, and one is a ground wire. Usually, the hot wire is black. The neutral wire is white. And the ground wire is green. Motors usually have three pin plugs. Other items also have them. When a motor has a three pin plug, the body of the motor is attached to the ground. If a spark goes from the electrical wires to the body of the motor, it will go harmlessly to the ground and not hurt anyone. On a two pin plug, usually one pin is larger than the other. The larger pin goes to the neutral or white wire. It is also grounded. That way if there is an electrical short in the device, it should not electrocute the person using it.
in two pin plug there is one slot for phase and another for neutral but in 3 pin plug third slot is of earthing. earthing prevents human body from current through the metalic part of instrument.the current is due to leakage.
The ground pin in a typical 3-prong plug is needed whenever a metal case on the device being powered could become a shock hazard if the live wire touched the case. A 2-prong plug is used only when there is not such a danger of touching a metal part on the device.
Two pin plugs have two pins, for live and neutral. Three pins plugs, perhaps not surprisingly, have three pins, live, neutral and earth.
The third and longest pin is for the ground.
Its because of polarity
No, it is not ok, it is potentially very dangerous because the two-wire cable has no earth with it. The earth wire is an important safety component that comes with a three-pin plug. An exception can be made for certain low-power appliances that have double insulation. This includes TV sets, radios, and table lights provided the mounting is plastic and not metal. These appliances are commonly sold with a twin-wire cable but often with a three-pin plug on the end of it. The three-pin plug in this case often has a plastic 'earth' pin and it is safe to replace it with a two-pin plug.
UK answer only: Yes but you need a three-pin to two-pin adaptor. Alternatively fit a three-pin plug to the light and leave the earth pin disconnected. This can only be done if the lamp already has a two-wire cable fitted to it, anything else is potentially dangerous.
In Gibraltar they use the type-G three-pin plugs as used in the UK. The type-C two-pin as used in Europe is also found there.
Yes, it is no trouble at all just make sure that the correct polarity of the connections are applied.
German appliances don't have three pinned plugs. The standards are the "Schoko" plug, which is a two pin plug with contacts on the side as a ground connection and the "Euro plug which is a two pin plug without a ground connection. There are adapters available at most good electrical stores.
The three pin plug is grounded (provided the receptacle is wired correctly).

On a UK three pin plug the two smaller prongs are Live (brown) and Neutral (blue). The Larger pin is for the Earth wire. This can prevent you getting an electric shock
This is dependent on the country for which the appliance was intended to be used in. Models for the United Kingdom will have a three pin plug, whilst European and American goods will have a two pin plug, although the type of pin does vary between these two continents.

You don't, in theory, because the ground wire is missing. But if you must, cut the end of and add the new three pin plug, the two flat pins are for the two wires, the round is for the ground that is missing. If something has only two wires, say a light fixture, adding a plug that has the three is useless because the ground wire is missing, so it does not become safer just because you added it. If the end is bad, then you get a plug end that comes apart and is made for adding to a wire, do not cut wire, add another plug end by splicing it together with electric tape.
Some pin plugs are mostly seen with three pins. The two pin plugs being flat, equal, and has a hole because this is where electricity flows. The round pin plug is used to absorb more flow of electricity for example computers and laptops have round pin plugs because it needs a lot of electricity, the round pin plug is only cut when using a device that doesn't need to much electricity to work.
No, the third pin is used for grounding purposes only.
The earth pin is longer in a three pin plug so that when being plugged it it makes contact to ground the equipmemt before the other pins make the equipment live. If the equipment has a fault, the earth circuit is already in place to deal with it.
