Self contained carpet extractors are much better because they have an agitator on the bottom which scrubs the carpet and pulls up the pile. The machine has 2 separate motors, one jet sprays the chemicals deep into the carpet and the second motor runs a powerful suction to extract the dirty residue. A steam cleaner is OK and has more suction, but the pull behind machine are better by far!
