Why is acid rain harmful to animals and plants?

Acid rain is a result of air pollution. When any type of fuel is burnt, lots of different chemicals are produced. The smoke that comes from a fire or the fumes that come out of a car exhaust don't just contain the sooty grey particles that you can see - they also contains lots of invisible gases that can be even more harmful to our environment. Power stations, factories and cars all burn fuels and therefore they all produce polluting gases. Some of these gases (especially nitrogen oxides and sulphur dioxide) react with the tiny droplets of water in clouds to form sulphuric and nitric acids. The rain from these clouds then falls as very weak acid - which is why it is known as "acid rain". Acid Rain and Forests It is thought that acid rain can cause trees to grow more slowly or even to die but scientists have found that it is not the only cause. The same amount of acid rain seems to have more effect in some areas than it does in others. As acid rain falls on a forest it trickles through the leaves of the trees and runs down into the soil below. Some of it finds its way into streams and then on into rivers and lakes. Some types of soil can help to neutralise the acid - they have what is called a "buffering capacity". Other soils are already slightly acidic and these are particularly susceptible to the effects of acid rain. Acid rain can effect trees in several different ways, it may: dissolve and wash away the nutrients and minerals in the soil which help the trees to grow. It can cause the release of harmful substances such as aluminium into the soil. wearing away the waxy protective coating of leaves, damaging them and preventing them from being able to photosynthesise properly. A combination of these effects weakens the trees which means that they can be more easily attacked by diseases and insects or injured by bad weather. It is not just trees that are affected by acid rain, other plants may also suffer. Acid rain can be carried great distances in the atmosphere, not just between countries but also from continent to continent. The acid can also take the form of snow, mists and dry dusts. The rain sometimes falls many miles from the source of pollution but wherever it falls it can have a serious effect on soil, trees, buildings and water. Forests all over the world are dying, fish are dying. Scientists have been doing a lot of research into how acid rain affects the environment. In Scandinavia there are dead lakes, which are crystal clear and contain no living creatures or plant life. It seems even freshwater fish are threatened, there have been reports of deformed fish being hatched. This leads to fish-eating birds and animals being affected also.

How does acid rain effect the water?

Acid rain effects water life really badly. Fish and plants in the oceans and lakes may end up dying because it is really hard of them to survive in acidic lakes. You can recognize a lake that died of acid rain when it has clean and crystal water. But the reason they look clean is because there are very little fishes and plants living in them. Most are unable to survive.

How does acid rain affect trees?

Trees are also harmed by acid rain. In Germany, the forests are believed to be dying because acid rain is harming them. Scientists say that acid rain damages the waxy outer coating that protects the leaves. When this happens, it allows the acid to seep into the tree. Instead of water changing from a liquid to a gas inside the leaves, gas is taking the place of the water. This prevents the plant from taking in carbon dioxide to perform photosynthesis, and the plant will eventually die. Acid rain, acid fog, and acid vapour also damage forests by damaging the surface of the leaves and needles. This makes it harder for the trees to withstand the cold and will cause the tree to die. Acid rain also harms the soil that the trees are growing in by taking most of the valuable nutrients away from the soil. Acid rain also leaves a lot of aluminum in the soil, which can be harmful to the trees that grow there. The atmosphere deposits a lot of toxic metals into the forests because acid rain contains metal. Some of these metals are lead, zinc, copper, chromium, and aluminum. When there is acid rain, the rain releases these metals. This is believed to stunt the growth of many trees and plants. This also stunts the growth of mosses, algae, nitrogen-fixing bacteria, and fungi that are needed to help the forest grow. Forests need these because they eat the harmful things that will kill the trees, such as bad bacteria. Acid rain hurts trees because they cannot grow any more. Hope this helps :)

Does temperature affect people differently?

Yes. some people are more sensitive to coldness and some are sensitive to hotness

What is the difference between acid rain and rain?

Acid rain is different to regular rain as it contains compounds of nitric oxide and other gases that have combined with water vapour in rain clouds to become acid rain...at least, i think so : )

Is there more trees in the world than fish?

ur wrong , fish is moer then trees.

Does planting trees help reduce acid rain?

the trees helps us in maintaining the earth atmosphere thus if we plant more and more trees the level of oxygen and carbondi oxide is maintained and thus prevent acid rain

What are the tree species resistant to acid rain?

All trees are susceptible to acid rain. It has been shown however, that evergreen trees and trees growing in high elevations are prone to more widespread and severe damage.

What kind of fish you can eat for you have high uric acid?

You should understand that when people digest protein, uric acid is a byproduct of that digestion. Fish does not contain uric acid, it contains protein. When you digest it, you will then produce uric acid. And all fish are high in protein. If you are trying to reduce the uric acid content of your blood, you will have to eat less fish in general. A vegetarian diet would work. Eat more avocados, less fish.

Why are coniferous trees more affected by acid rain than deciduous trees?

The soil near mountaintops tends to be thinner and more susceptible to problems. This being the case, high-elevation trees are doubly susceptible because of the marginal nature of their soil.

How is acid rain affecting the earth?

Sulfur dioxide & nitrogen dioxide can cause problems such as asthma, dry coughs, headaches, eye, nose, and throat irritations. Acid rain can also damage or irritate our lungs. It can cause liver problems and can give you diarrhea.Sulfur dioxide can react with water vapor and some other chemicals in the air to form very fine particles of sulfate. These airborne particles form a key component of urban smog and are now recognized as a significant health hazard. For example, if fish die, and the fish that eats that fish, so on, and so then humans cant eat fish no more that's what's going to happen if the water is to acidic!!Acid rain can damage lots of things like trees. Acid rain effects trees because they react with many nutrients this the trees need, such as calcium, magnesium and potassium. This makes the trees starve, doing damage to the fruit that are growing. Acid rain, then, makes the trees much weaker to other forms of damage, such as being blown down, or breaking under the weight of snow.It also affects soil. Soil is the basis of wealth upon which all land - based life depends.Acid rain can damage the crops that grow in the soil. Farmers need a lot of soil because they plant crops. After growing, farmers ship them to stores like Markets.Acid rain affects lakes and rivers. All the fish in lakes and rivers will die. All the fish in 140 lakes in Minnesota have been severely affected because of the acidic water. To the extent that the aquatic animals die. Water polluted fish don't reproduce. In our world there are substances that can be either an acid, a base or neutral (in the middle). Acid effect our planet because in many things there is acid such as in air pollution from factories and other things and this is called acid rain. An acid cloud of pollution moves across the sky and soon rains out acid into the roots of trees and our oceans. This can effect living things and our earth greatly.

Comparative: more sensitive Superlative: most sensitive

Why is the pH of the ocean more acidic at night?

because there are more Carbonic acid on the air at night (from the trees) and it is solved in water and make it acidic.

WHAT?! did you just give a fish, oil? To answer your question I don't think so. They have more sensitive digestive systems then some others.

Is flarp noise putty toxic if licked?

Boric acid can be toxic to children if licked or swallowed, children are more sensitive to it more than adults. If your dog swallowed it it wouldnt really do that much.
