The short anaswer is that the C is considered MB's entry level, the E is a mid level and the S is the premium.

A better answer is that the S class is a business level executive luxury vehicle, used primarily as a 1st class transport for rich folks. It's not as sporty as the classes below it, but offers the most comfort and space. In exchange, it gives up maneuverability in tighter spaces and cornering ability.

The C class is the smallest, but is far more sporty when taking the turns than the cumbersome S class. It also is somewhat better on a track than its mid range sibling, the E class. The C class also is much more affordable to most middle class families, since its starting price is just over 30,000 USD.

The E class merely offers a balance between the two.

In a straight line, all three of these cars perform quite well for their respective sizes, with the E class AMG just barely pulling ahead of the C, which outperforms the S.
