it is greater to stop something dead in its tracks because when it directly stops the mass will be the same because it stops with the most mass it has gain.

Controlling the ball by stopping or changing its direction?

Can objects with different masses have the same momentum?

Yes. Momentum is rigidly defined as the product of mass and velocity. Velocity describes both a speed and a direction. So let's take two metal balls. One weighs 10 kilograms (kg) and the other weighs 20kg. We roll the 10kg ball along a flat and level floor at 2 meters per second (m/s) and the 20 kg ball at 1 m/s. 10*2 = 20*1 so they have the same momentum. If you have a friend roll the balls for you to catch some distance away, making sure after a few tests to roll the lighter ball at twice the speed of the heavier ball, you will find that it "feels" as if both balls hit your hand with about the same force. Your hand is stopping each ball. That is a force which is defined as the rate of change in momentum. Stopping each ball will cause your muscles to exert about the same strength to stop each ball, even though one is moving at double the speed of the other. You will then feel that two objects can indeed travel at different speeds and yet have the same momentum. JGS

Do Empty trucks have the best braking?

Yes, because they have the lowest momentum. This is the kinetic energy that must be removed (usually as heat) by the braking mechanism. The heavier a truck gets, the harder it is to stop, and this usually increases stopping distance.

Does friction affect stopping distance?

Yes, friction affects stopping distance. The greater the friction the lower the stopping distance; the lower the friction the greater the stopping distance.

What forces make swing to stop?

Friction of air normally called drag (or air resistance), it could be argued that gravity also takes effect in stopping the swing, if it was only drag the swing could stop ten feet in the air, and if it was just gravity it wouldn't stop due to the laws of mass and momentum. The drag reduces the momentum, therefore making the swing slow to a stop and gravity keeps it as close to the ground as possible.

Which is worse for the occupants of a car hitting a tree and stopping or hitting a tree and rebounding?

It is worse if the car rebounds, as the total change of momentum is greater - from X to -Y(worst case - opposite direction) instead of from X to 0(in case of stopping).

What energy or momentum of a vehicle can be offset by allwoing an increase in stopping distance?

What does momentum have to do with a race car driver?

People use that word in two ways. In the technical way, momentum is what prevents the brakes from stopping the car instantly. It is the weight-that-wants-to-keep-on-moving. In the other way, momentum means that a driver who has won a few races can be expected to win the next race.
