The most endangered species of bird is probably the kakapo. The kakapo is the world's only flightless parrot. It is found in New Zealand, and is critically endangered due to the introduction of non-native predators in that country. There are believed to be less than 100 adult birds remaining.
As for North American birds, the ivory billed woodpecker and Bachman's warbler may even be lower in numbers. The ivory bill was considered extinct until 2004, when a single bird was spotted and videotaped in the White River Refuge of Arkansas. Since then, there have credible sightings in other states, particulary Florida and Louisiana, but any remnant population must be small, 100 birds or less.
The Bachman's warbler was also considered recently extinct, but a female was seen foraging on its wintering grounds in Cuba. Again, this bird's population must be extremely small, maybe less than 100, but no one knows for certain, as this tiny bird is very nondescript, and inhabits cane thickets near swamps.
The Spixes Macaw Cyanopsitta spixii is the one of the rarest birds in the world because it is exinct in the wild and there are only 73 left. Another one is the Alagoas Curassow Mitu mitu that is also extinct in the wild and there are only 48 left. Another one is the Kakapo, a nocturnal parrot that still exists in the wild, but it is very rare.
