Best Answer

UV-B and UV-C are filtered by the ozone layer present in the atmosphere and only UV-A reaches to the earth which cause the various skin infection. if we talk about the frequency of the UV-B and UV-C the because of the higher frequency the UV-C is more harmful. UV with the wavelength of 253.7 nm is used for its germicidal activity.

What are 3 types of ultra violet radiation?

Why would you use a plastic prism?

I take it you mean "instead of glass / crystal" as opposed to why use a prism at all. 1. Cheaper - Depending on the material and specification, a simple prism can be made on an extrusion basis and simply sliced to length making for a very inexpensive product. 2. Lighter - many plastics are much less dense than glass - if the task can be handled with plastic and weight is an issue, glass would be a poor alternative. 3. Stability - although glass may have a higher survival rate (temperature), a prism that must be exposed for some reason may well be more vulnerable to chipping than plastic 4. Transmission / Reflection properties. Although most of the visible spectrum will pass well through all clear glass / plastics, as you begin to approach IR and most especially UV, the material have VERY different properties. UVB and UVC for example being blocked by most glass - hence UVC lamps use quartz rather than regular glass. To give more information, it would help to know if there is a specific focus to your question - eg: application specific - in which case other factors may or may not be worth mentioning.

What are two ways that a person can safeguard their skin from ultraviolet radiation?

Wear sunglasses that wrap around and block as close to 100% of both UVA and UVB rays as possible. Use sunscreen with sun protective factor (SPF) 15 or higher, and both UVA and UVB protection.

How does saving energy help the world?

Most energy used in today's society is harmful tot the environmnet and our planet. Conserving energy will let off less harmful emmisions and lessen the demand for utilities that give off harmful energy

Is gamma rays harmful?

Yes very, They are the most powerful/dangerous of all light waves.

Is uv radiation harmful?

UV radiation is very harmful in many ways, first off they are invisible rays that come from the sun, UV radiation is made of ultraviolet A (UVA), ultraviolet B (UVB), and ultraviolet C (UVC). These rays burn skin and cause cancer. UVB and UVC penetrate the ozone layer. UVA and UVB cause skin cancer, for this reason, sunscreens are recommended that block UVA and UVB.

What is the definition of the word UVC?

There are two definitions for UVC. One being radiation in the ultraviolet spectrum and is more hazardous than UVB. The second is medical which has essentially the same meaning.

What is ultra violet radiation given off by?

UV radiation is given off by the sun. UV radiation is a broad spectrum that consists of UVA, UVB and UVC radiation. The planets atmosphere protects us from harmful UVA and 90% UVB radiation, leaving unharmful UVC radiation to pass through the atmosphere. However, due to the increasing number of greenhouse gases, Ozone is being broken down a lot faster than it should, which in turn means that more harmful UV radiation can come through, which means that we are at a higher risk of cancer.

What is the difference between UV-A and UV-B?

U.V can be separated according to its energy level and wavelength with UVa having the lowest energy and longest wavelength followed by UVb and ultimately UVc which has the shortest wavelength and highest energy level. You may be familiar with UVa and UVb as the part of the suns rays which cause tanning, aging, and skin cancer. The Sun also emits UVc the most powerful and dangerous type of U.V., fortunately for us most of this is stopped in the upper atmosphere by gasses like ozone.

What type of electromagnetic radiation can give you sunburn?

The main form of electromagnetic radiation that give you a sunburn is Ultra Violet (UV) radiation. (UV rays) Ultra-violet is furthered graded to UVa UVb and UVc. UVa - is necessary for the production of Vitamin D UVb - is required for certain anti-cancer process in the skin. UVc - has no beneficial function and is the most energetic and responsible for the majority of the sun burn.

Which light rays can cause skin damage similar to sunburn?

There are three types of rays- UVA, UVB and UVC. UVB and UVA act differently upon our skin and do not equally damage it. The UVB rays are mostly responsible for most cases of sunburn, as they are shorter than UVA rays. The UVA rays are longer so reach the inner state of the skin and causes skin damage.

What is the difference between uv-c uv-a and uv-b?

U.V can be separated according to its energy level and wavelength with UVa having the lowest energy and longest wavelength followed by UVb and ultimately UVc which has the shortest wavelength and highest energy level. You may be familiar with UVa and UVb as the part of the suns rays which cause tanning, aging, and skin cancer. The Sun also emits UVc the most powerful and dangerous type of U.V., fortunately for us most of this is stopped in the upper atmosphere by gasses like ozone.

What electromagnetic waves must sunscreen protect the skin?

UVa and UVb are considered beneficial to the skin as they are responsible for the production of Vitamin D and certain anti-cancer processes. UVc is considered carcinogenic and therefore anything above that is as well.

Do unpolarized Oakley sunglasses protect against harmful UV rays?

Polarization and UV protection is completely different. Every lens available in an Oakley sunglass offers 100% UVA, UVB, and UVC protection as well as protection against harmful blue light. Even a clear Oakley lens offers that same protection. So yes, polarized or not it will offer the uv protection.

How is it possible for stratospheric ozone to offer any protection from UV radiation?

Ultraviolet radiation is a portion of the electromagnetic spectrum with wavelengths shorter than visible light. The sun produces UV, which is commonly split into three bands: UVA, UVB, and UVC. UVA is not absorbed by ozone. UVB is mostly absorbed by ozone, although some reaches the Earth. UVC is completely absorbed by ozone and normal oxygen. see related link

How the sun as radiation sources?

The sun has 3 types of wavelengths. UVA (315-400 nm), UVB (280-325 nm), and UVC (180-280). UVA wavelenghts is the type which is the biggest cause of sunburn, skin aging, eye damage, and may even affect immune systems. UVB wavelengths on the other hand are the type more responsible for skin cancers. Only the last, UVC is the least harmful of all as much of it is blocked by the ozone layer and absorbed into the environment before it reaches us.The majority of UV radiation is between 10 and 4. UV radiation is so powerful that you can become sunburned on cloudy days.
