A nail would be worse, at it is generally longer than a thumbtack and more likely to have rust or other debris that could cause infection.
I think a nail because it will go through your foot and rust and give you all kinds of diseases, plus you'll be bleeding like crap. but I think a thumbtack would hurt as equally as bad if you were to jab it into your freaking eye. but truthfully I think they would both hurt like butt.
A thumbtack is a small nail with an unusually large head, that is designed to be pushed into place by a thumb, rather than by a hammer, as would be done with a regular nail. Thumbtacks are normally used to hold pieces of paper in place, on a cork board, wall, etc.

I work for Dish Network as an installer. I stepped on a nail about two days ago. It went through my boot and into my foot. The nail was approx. 3". I went to the hospital where they pulled the nail out and gave me a tetnus booster and an Antibiotic IV due to the rust on the nail. Im still out of work and on two different antibiotics and a mild pain killer. I cannot walk or put any weight on my foot. I have an appoinment for the doctor on monday to check on the infection. Take my advice just go to the doctor. I have a phobia of doctors and needles but the pain is alot so its worth it.
The temperature of the nail increases.
