The alt key is used with an access key to display a menu.

Press alt and F4 at the same time.

Press the Esc key or click on the Cancel button, which is the red x beside where you are typing your entry.
To confirm your selection on the screen, you should press the "Enter" key.
You can delete it if it has already been entered, by pressing the delete key. If you are still typing it in you can press the Esc key or the red X on the formula bar to stop it.

The action is actually called Cut. You can do it in lots of ways. You can use the Cut command from the Edit menu. You can press and hold the Ctrl key and then press the X key. You can get Cut by right clicking on the mouse and picking the command from the shortcut menu that appears. You can press the shortcut menu key on your keyboard and pick it from there. You can press and hold the Shift key and then press the Delete key.
