Nefertiti was one of the most powerful queens of Egypt, but only a goddess insofar as the Egyptians considered all of their pharaohs divine. She was the wife of Akhenamun (later called Akhenaten), and after he died, she ruled independently for a time before the rule of the kingdom was taken over by Smenkhare. One theory is that Smenkhare was, in fact, a name for Nefertiti.
