Anubis was, to the Greeks perceived as Hermes, who could enter travel to whatever kingdom he desired, and this much was true of Anubis and many of the ancient Egyptian gods and goddesses as well; they were not "stuck" in kingdoms and roles, Hathor once became Sekhmet a Eye of Ra to slay the enemies of Ra. It means that the Egyptian gods and goddesses could be very changeable indeed.

In the Old Kingdom Anubis was the ancient Egyptian god who ruled the Duat (underworld) or Aaru (heaven).
In the Old Kingdom Anubis was a embalmer and lord of the dead; the Middle Kingdom saw him put into a lesser role with Osiris as lord of the dead and Anubis as embalmer god and guide, protector and tester of the dead in the Duat (underworld).
It is likely, given that the Old Kingdom of Egypt mentions Anubis, that the worship of Anubis in Egypt predates the Pharaoh ruling over Egypt.

It is most recognized that Anubis' mother was Nephthys, goddess of death and the journey. Nephthys was the wife of Set. Once the Middle Kingdom reorganized the pantheon to indicate Osiris is Anubis' father it changes. Isis was Osiris' wife. This would make Isis Anubis' mother in this case.
Although it is unknown when Anubis is said to have been born we do know he is one of the most ancient of Egyptian dieties.
