it depends on what you want it for. Cheaper models tend to be less powerful with regard to graphics, memory and processor speed. I have a personal dislike of the 'redundant' technology employed in laptop/notebook computers. If it goes wrong, try getting it repaired it will usually be cheaper to purchase a new one (hence redundant technology) But, like I said, it depends on want you actually want from the machine itself. Don't be influenced by techy jargon. Be sure of want you want to do with it and ask those questions. If its gaming and heavy video streaming then go for a desktop.
