The grasshopper has three pairs of legs. The front pair is used for both walking and holding food as well as climbing. The middle pair is used for walking and climbing. The back pair is used for jumping only.
The pairs of legs around the upper body is used to travel wherever and the pairs of legs towards the annus(bottom) is to jump.
Grasshoppers mostly jump and use their hind legs beacuse it is more decent and they can travel further in shorter time.

yes grasshoppers do have jointed legs...how would they jump.
the hind legs are folded in the shape of a Z in the position poised for a jump. the legs of grasshopper jerks backwards when the extensor muscle contracts. when the flexor muscle in the upper part of the grasshopper's legs contract, the lower parts of the legs are pulled towards the body. the grasshopper propels forward and upward into the air. if the hind leg muscle injured, the grasshopper cannot jump but it can walk.
Grasshoppers have large legs so that they can jump higher and easier.
