The question makes it appear that General Suvorov crossed only one Swiss mountain pass with his army during the Swiss campaign of 1799. He crossed in fact four: The St. Gotthard, the Chinzig, the Pragel and finally the formidable Panixer. Some of his troops, that is those that were dispatched to threaten the French army's rear north of the Gotthard, had to cross even one more pass. Instead of the St. Gotthard they crossed the Lukmanier pass und then one more, the Oberalp east of Andermatt.
The Alps. Hannibal broke through famously, but no other mountain range can really lay claim to the number of armies that the Alps deflected. The Himalaya have probably never been crossed by an invading force (am I wrong?), but the Alps most likely protected more cultures. The Alps. Breed's Hill, or Charleston Hill, is part of the overall structure of Bunker Hill, being the closest part of the peninsula to the Charles River, across which is central Boston. The American commander, Colonel William Prescott, had actually been ordered to build his fortifications on Bunker Hill, and opted for the closer position to the river. In retreating, the colonials crossed Bunker Hill moving up the peninsula to the northwest. (see related map link)
The English Channel was crossed on D-Day. Many of the ships came further from west England and had 3-4 day voyages.
Only the US Army (not the USMC, Navy, or Air Force) use a "branch insignia" identifying their speciality (job-termed MOS=Military Occupational Speciality). Examples: Armor-two crossed swords with the front view of a M26 Pershing tank centered on the swords; Infantry-two crossed muskets; Artillery-two crossed cannon tubes (barrels); Military Police-two crossed pistols; Signal Corps-two crossed flags; Transportation-a ship's steering wheel; Chemical Corps-two crossed labratory flasks; Ordnance-a cartoon looking bomb with a fuse on top; Engineers-a castle; Administration-a red, white, and blue shield; etc. The US Special Forces (Green Berets) use two crossed ARROWS. The SF specialize in using early (primitive) weapons. The SF used "Tomahawks" in Vietnam.
