'Two fingers' is not a standard measure, but this type of measure is used in describing topography.

It works because though the width of my two fingers will be different to yours, the finger width is very roughly constant against the length of the arm.

So the quote should be "two fingers at arm's length" .

e.g. "The tree two fingers distant, at 4 o'clock from the stream forks."
