The mechanism for evolution that was proposed by Jean Baptiste Lamarck was that organisms began life as primitive forms but adapted to their environment and became more complex forms. He also claimed that as time progressed, new primitive organisms were also occurring, so that they may evolve in the future.

What is the mechanism of Darwin's proposed theory?

The mechanism and main driver of adaptive change in evolution is natural selection.

Was Lamarck correct?

Lamarck was correct about the connection between the environment and evolution. He saw that the organism changes based on the environment and its survival. However, Lamarck is not well-known for his advances in the field. Instead, he is known for the incorrect mechanisms for evolution that he proposed, including "use and disuse" and "inheritance of acquired characteristics." (A small note, Lamarck definitely did not have a "theory," he had hypotheses).

How was lamarks theory of evolution different than Darwin's theory?

Lamarck's theory of evolution proposed that traits acquired during the lifetime of the parent were genetically passed on to children. Some animal might, according to Lamarck's theory, learn a novel way of obtaining food, and then its children would be born with this novel mechanism already in place. Darwin, contrarily, proposed that lineages evolved new traits though natural selection: by the elimination of lineages that do *not* possess a certain trait.

Alfred Russell Wallace proposed the same major theory as what scientist?

Charles Darwin and Jean-Babtiste Lamarck. (Theory of Evolution)

Why did Darwin think giraffes are a good example of natural selections?

Actually, it was Lamarck who earlier introduced the giraffe as an example for evolution - Lamarckian evolution, to be sure. Lamarck proposed that there was some mechanism by which the short-necked ancestors of giraffes could acquire a change such that their offspring would have necks better suited to their needs. Darwin applied natural selection to the same example mainly because it had already been discussed in such detail.

What question did both Lamarck and Darwin try to answer with their theories of evolution?

What is the mechanism that causes evolution. Both knew evolution occurred and occurs but did not know how or why. Lamark's " desire to evolve " and " acquired characteristics " failed to explain evolution. Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection was the better explanation.

How would vestigial traits be explained if evolution occurred via inheritance of acquired characters as proposed by Lamarck?

as a change in an individual's phenotype in response to an environmental challenge
