Italy has the Adriatic sea on it's east side and the Tyrrhenian sea on its west side.
The Mediterranean exclusively borders Italy on its southern edge. However, extensions of the Mediterranean (such as the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic Seas) border Italy on its west and east sides as well.
The Mediterranean is the sea that surrounds the Italian islands of Sardinia and Sicily, and the three sides of the Italian peninsula. Its waters take on different, local names around each of the sides of the Italian peninsula. On the east side, they're called the Adriatic Sea. It's the sea by which the Italian city of Venezia [Venice] is accessed. To the south, they're called the Ionian Sea. On the west side, between Sicily and Sardinia, they're called the Tyrrhenian Sea. And between the northwest Italian coast and the islands of Corsica and Sardinia, they're called the Ligurian Sea.
Rome then and now is in Italy. Greece is to the east, over on the other side of the Adriatic Sea.
The country of Croatia is a democratic parliamentary republic that is located in the Balkans region of Europe. It shares borders with Slovenia to the north, Hungary to the north and east, Serbia to the east and Bosnia and Herzegovina to the south and east. Croatia borders the Adriatic Sea on the west, with the Italian peninsula being on the other side of the Adriatic Sea.
The Adriatic Sea on one side
The Apennine Mountains prove to be a vital member of the Italian geography. This boundary not only culturally separated the East and West Lowland areas, but also provided a huge barrier to attack. If Italy was ever attacked from one side, it would be able to build enough forces on the other side of the mountains in time to counter the opposing force. This natural layout prevented any swift attacks from either the Adriatic or the Tyrrhenian Seas.
The countries on the eastern side of the Adriatic are Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Montenegro and Albania. As we reach Greece, the Adriatic turns into the Ionian sea which has a number of Greek islands in it including Corfu and Kefalonia.
