The only missionary that I know that went to Ireland was St. Patrick. Since that time, Ireland has usually send out missionaries to the rest of the world, not vice-versa.
Missionaries
Missionaries came to Ireland in order to convert the generally Pagan population to Catholicism . They did this through preaching and combining the teachings of Catholicism with the previous Pagan traditions. This obviously worked as Ireland is now a 90% Catholic nation the other 10% being made up largely of non-nationals who practice different religions. However, a recent survey showed that 86% of people, although claiming to be Catholic, do not attend mass.
There had already been missionaries in Ireland before St. Patrick and there was already a small Catholic community established there. Patrick seemed to have more success at drawing converts, however.
Roman Catholic AnswerIn different centuries, missionaries came from different countries to convert Europe. A lot of them originated in Rome and Italy, St. Augustine converted England, and later St. Patrick converted Ireland. Ireland, however, send missionaries all over Europe and the world for many centuries. Here in the United States, the last wave of Irish priests that came to serve are just now approaching retirement.
Ireland has thousands of years of history so it would be impossible to answer your question. There have been people living in Ireland for at least 8000 years. Ireland's history is long and complex. There are the viking elements, the elements associated with Ireland's relationship with Britain, elements associated with the early times of Christianity in Ireland and its spreading in Ireland and how Irish missionaries spread Christianity to other parts of the world. There is so much more to Irish history too. It is a massive area, as is the history of any country.
Ireland is famous for its missionaries down through the centuries. An old nickname for Ireland was the land of saints and scholars. From famous saints like Columba (also known as St. Columcille), Columbanus, Kilian and Forannan down to ordinary people who even today still go to countries to help spread Christianity.
