169.254.xxx.xxx is used for internal purposes only. If you see such IP address it means that you are not connected to a network.

set the ip configuration to automatic, you have probably define an manual ip adrress which is not in the same range of your dsl modem, also check that you have entered your dsl modem ip address as your gateway in ip configuration page . its usally 192.168.1.1.
