The River Nile flooded every year between June and September, in a season the Egyptians called akhet - the inundation. However with the building of The High Dam, as-Sad al-'Aali, completed on 21 July 1970, the flooding is now under control.

The Nile River starts flooding its banks in southern Sudan in April or May, but it is July or August before the flood waters arrive at Aswan in Egypt, and September before they reach their peak. It is October before the land floods near Cairo. Nile flooding in Egypt have been somewhat controlled since construction of the Aswan High Dam was completed in 1971.
