The Tian Shan is important in helping scientists identify the signs of a coming earthquake. Specifically, it's always the location of an earthquake within 1-1/2 years of earthquakes in the Altai and Hindu Kush mountain ranges. Scientists therefore have 1-1/2 years in which to recognize earthquake warning signs and also apply that knowledge to predicting earthquakes in other areas.
