The Appalachians are part of the same range as the Scottish Highlands and Norwegian mountains - formed long before the Atlantic Ocean started to open - so are much older than the Rockies and their South American continuation, the Alps and the Himalaya. Consequently they have been in a state of erosion for much longer.
