In my opinion, the original The Grudge is much scarier than any of the Saw movies. However, the sequels to The Grudge are awful; the Saw movies are definitely better than The Grudge sequels.Depends on what scares you. "The Grudge" is much more about ghosts, mysteries, and the paranormal. Whether they accomplish this in a really scary way depends a lot on the viewer. But, comparatively, it is less gory."Saw" is a snuff film (no offense) where the horror comes primarily through the violent psychological, and ultimately physical, slow and gruesome destruction of a bunch of people who find they are connected in one way or another. It is, in a word, disturbing. This kind of thrill/fear has a significant following, which is why the franchise has continued to an almost ridiculous extreme.Personally, I have trouble watching the extreme gore of a movie like "Saw", but some people really think it's scary.If you're looking for a spooky rental, I suggest a dark night, dim lighting, maybe a fire in the fireplace, and watch "The Strangers." Believe it or not, this film is much scarier when watched at home rather than a theater. In my opinion it was treated somewhat unfairly by critics. The story relates more with regular moviegoers than does "The Grudge", while providing plenty of the psychological horror found in a "Saw" movie.
