The strongest Flexor of the hip (thigh) is illiopsoas muscle which is the merger of the illiacus and the psoas major muscle. The illiacus is on the medial side of the pelvic bone attaching to the femur and the psoas major muscle attaches from the lumbar vertebrae to the femur.

The most important hip flexor is the iliopsoas, running from the spine to the femur in the thigh. There is also the rectus femoris, which runs from the front of the hip to the knee along the top of the thigh. It flexes the hip as well as extending the knee. The sartorius runs from the similar spot on the hip to the inside of the knee. It flexes both the hip and the knee.

The main hip flexor is the iliopsoas which consists of the psoas major, psoas minor, and the iliacus. After these muscles, the next one in importance would be the rectus femoris which is part of the quadriceps group. The other significant muscle used to flex the hip would be the sartorius. Of lesser importance would be: pectineus, adductor longus, adductor brevis, and tensor fasciae latae.

How does the action of the rectus abdominis differ from that of the other abdominal muscles?

The rectus femoris differs from the other quadriceps muscle in that it crosses both the hip and the knee joints. Thus, it causes both flexion of the hip and extension of the knee.
