Most people believe it was the battle of Guadalcanal where USA enterprise, battleship North Carolina and many other navy ships crushed the Japanese fleet as a counter to pearl harbor.

Most of the fighting was in Europe. There was only 1 major Naval battle, in the North Sea, called Jutland or the Skaggerak, in 1916. There was also fighting in the Middle East & in Africa.
Holding the pass at Thermopylae was used to force a naval battle. The Greeks lost the naval battle, so it was to no avail or effect.
