mRNA, or messenger RNA, is generated by reading a strand of DNA. RNA polymerase (an enzyme that specifically makes mRNA) moves along the strand of DNA and joins complementary strands (in RNA, the complement to adenine is uracil instead of thymine). mRNA is produced only for the gene that is being read at that time. This process is called transcription.
