A pie chart will usually have a legend to indicate what each slice represents. The legend will show the colour or pattern of each of the slices and a description of what it represents that is set by the user.
Because it always represents how a whole of something is split up. So as it represents all of something, then it is 100%. The pie chart then shows how it is split up.

Here are two explanations that are both correct. Use whichever works for you:Its basically the bit, usually in the corner, that explains what each colour (or whatever is being used) on the pie chart represents.So, you might have a pie chart that is divided into sections, with each section having a different colour. The key is often a short list of small squares that are in all the colours on the pie chart. Besides these squares will be the thing that their colour represents on the pie chart.

The legend tells you what each bar or column or line or pie slice etc. represents on your chart. It is usually colour-coded to help you and has the names beside them that are got from your spreadsheet or just as Series1, Series2 etc., if you did not specify names.
Data labels appear on charts. If your right click on an item in a chart, such as a bar or a pie or a line, you can choose Format Data Series and then you can choose Data Labels. You have a choice of various types of data labels to put in, such as the actual value or the percentage.
To present a graphical representation of the data that makes it easier for the viewer to compare data items with the whole data set (pie chart) or with each other (bar chart).
