Lava flows can pose great danger to people. They may cover the land and can even set buildings or trees on fire. Lava flows, however, are actually the least dangerous part of a volcanic eruption. Most lava flows do not move particularly fast. And because they are fluid, they tend to flow along low-lying areas, this means that predicting the path of the lava is fairly easy. Although property will be destroyed, people in areas likely to be affected by the lava can be evacuated. Ash from violent eruptions, in contrast, often poses great environmental and personal dangers. The ash may cover everything it falls on. It blocks sunlight, smother crops, and coats people's lungs. During an ash fall, the ash that has been ejected into the atmosphere settles back to the earth over a wide area.

Great answer for any volcanic science homework that was thoroughly researched!

The greatest danger of volcanic eruptions is volcanic ash, which can continue to take its toll through contaminated air long after the eruption has ceased. The ash can also effect transportation since flights as well as automotive engines can fail to function with an influx of volcanic ash.
