The ancestry of the American Saddlebred horse began in the 18th century, when American settlers crossed the now extinct Narragansett Pacer with English Thoroughbreds. This horse was known as the American Horse, and was used extensively in the Revolutionary War. Eventually it made its way into Kentucky, and in the 1800's became known as the Kentucky Saddler. In the 1830's blood from the Morgan and more Thoroughbred was added, and this produced the horse we know today as the American Saddlebred. The foundation sire was Denmark, born in 1839. More than 60% of all modern American Saddlebreds trace back to him.
