Is a Visual Display unit a input or a output?

Its an output device. By visual display unit I assume you're referring to one of the following: a tv, a computer monitor or a laptop screen. All 3 are output devices. The difference b/w an input and an output device is simply user input. An input device receives input from a user, an output device does not. A mouse (receives user clicks), A microphone (receives user audio), a keyboard are input devices.

If you use your desktop computer only for doing schoolwork which input and output device combination would be best?

The standard input and output devices would be sufficient for most purposes. Nowadays, when you purchase a typical computer it already includes a keyboard (input), a mouse (input), a monitor (output), and speakers (output), so you probably don't need to purchase those separately. (If you write a lot, but ONLY if you do ten-finger typing, I would strongly recommend an ergonomic (curved) keyboard, for instance one of the Microsoft Natural keyboards.) If you don't already have a printer (that's also output), you may want to purchase one as well. You may or may not need a scanner (input); one option is a combined printer/scanner/photocopier.

Can a function have more than one output per one input?

No. A function has only one output per input.

Is an moniter an input or output?

In the strictest sense, no. It is an output device only. However, touch screens are input devices, but some would say this is just the touch panel mounted on top of the screen - so the screen is an output device while the touch panel is a separate input device. They are integrated into one unit but do have separate connection to the computer. Some would say its it one unit that does both input and output since the touch panel is integrated. The case could be made for either really, its just semantics anyway. Also, some monitors have USB hubs built in, but these really just bridge the USB device and the USB controller in the PC with no actual processing of data, so really shouldn't be considered an input device either.
