Well, yes, the ethernet cable should run faster than the regular serial cable, but I don't think that would be the most efficient approach. You should add the NIC to the PC that doesn't have one, and then get a router to allow both PC's to access the cable modem. Adding the ethernet cable would only speed it up to the maximum speed allowed by your Cable Internet Provider

At first shutdown your m/c ,then open the case of the m/c ,insert the NIC card in the white slot(called PCI slot), properly installed on the PCI Slot , cover the case, start the m/c , then while m/c starting it ask u new H/w installed and ask the device driver the for that NIC card , u have the CD for that NIC card or u store on the drive else where, give it the location while installation.It installed the NIC Proper, u want check that one ---Go to the my computer ->right click on that icon->managed ->device driver->check Ethernet card have the no mark (as Yello Ques mark or Red mark) that means NIC Card installed properly . u use it ....

The Data-Link layer is the place where the data's are broken in to small transferable packets. The NIC card is included into this layer is for one main reason as i have studied. Though the NIC card is a Physical device the algorithms which are embed with in the NIC card do the packet process. dlink is the best one with 7.2 mbps with wifi.you can also insert memory card in it.
