A NIC is capable of receiving and transmitting data at a faster rate than a modem. However, if the NIC is connected to a network which is powered by a modem, they will both run at the slower speed of the modem.

What is the difference between a modem and a NIC card?

Oh, dude, a modem is like that thing that connects you to the internet, while a NIC card is like the thing that helps your computer communicate within a network. So, it's like the modem is the gateway to the internet, and the NIC card is the social butterfly of your computer, making friends with other devices. They're both important, but in different ways, you know?

Why is a network card need for a network?

Network Interface Card(NIC) is used to connect a PC to the the network. It is fixed into one of the computer's expansion slot. In wireless network also NIC is used.It can be identified by a light.

Who uses the modem?

One who want to connect to the internet.

What happens if a computer has more than one nic?

Having more than one NIC on a computer can cause Internet connectivity problems if the correct configurations are not performed. For example, one should not allocate both NIC's to the same subnet.

What security advantage occurs from Packaet's containing the source NIC address and not just the destination NIC address?

The message must travel from your computer to your router. Every computer connected to a network has a network interface card (NIC) with a unique physical address, called a MAC address (for Media Access Control). At the data link level, two more headers are added, one for your computer's NIC address (the source MAC) and one for your router's NIC address. A data link layer structure with destination MAC, source MAC, and data is called a frame. Every NIC selects from the network those frames with its own address as a destination address. The data link layer adds the structure necessary for data to get from your computer to another computer (a router is just a dedicated computer) on your network. Data Link Layer Transformation.

How do you know if your wired NIC is integrated?

If it is on a laptop, then it is. If of is on a desktop then you have to look at the plug. Open your computer case, if you network plug is on a card (card may look like you video card and others around it) then it is not integrated. Integrates is just a way of saying built on the motherboard. Just because you may haven integrated nic, does not mean cannot add a better / faster one. Just gets card.

How many IP addresses can be assigned to a network interface card in the Windows 2000 environment?

Only one IP address (either static or DHCP)could be assigned , if you have just one NIC card, but should be able to assign up to the number of NIC cards you have on the system 2,3,4 or 5. but we can aliases in the nic it possible . the max we can have upto 10 ips in one nic

Would using a third nic with ethernet cable and ics software to share a cable modem connection with other computer increase the speed of the second computer which is using ics with a null modem serial?

Well, yes, the ethernet cable should run faster than the regular serial cable, but I don't think that would be the most efficient approach. You should add the NIC to the PC that doesn't have one, and then get a router to allow both PC's to access the cable modem. Adding the ethernet cable would only speed it up to the maximum speed allowed by your Cable Internet Provider

What is the name of the hardware component that enables a computer to send and receive data?

This could be a modem or network card most commonly, but can also be a large number of other devices. It depends on the method of sending and receiving- A CD burner or floppy drive can send and receive data, just not in an entirely automated process.

Which type of adapter card enables you to connect a computer to a network?

How do you change an nic card?

At first shutdown your m/c ,then open the case of the m/c ,insert the NIC card in the white slot(called PCI slot), properly installed on the PCI Slot , cover the case, start the m/c , then while m/c starting it ask u new H/w installed and ask the device driver the for that NIC card , u have the CD for that NIC card or u store on the drive else where, give it the location while installation. It installed the NIC Proper, u want check that one ---Go to the my computer ->right click on that icon->managed ->device driver->check Ethernet card have the no mark (as Yello Ques mark or Red mark) that means NIC Card installed properly . u use it ....

Why are NIC cards classified at data link layer?

The Data-Link layer is the place where the data's are broken in to small transferable packets. The NIC card is included into this layer is for one main reason as i have studied. Though the NIC card is a Physical device the algorithms which are embed with in the NIC card do the packet process. The data link layer is the place where the packets are sent to the next layer. though it looks simple the algorithm is not a simple calculation. i hope this would help u all M.R.A.RAHMAN mcp, mcsa, mcse, ICT HND network, BCAS Sri Lanka Kandy
