All sins are equal in God's eyes. It doesn't matter what sin you commited as long as you sinned it's bad. To forgive this sin you must ask for forgiveness

yes, but id like to add to this, the mosaic law was the perfect law from god to his chosen people, from Abraham, to david, to eventually bare seed to Jesus. Now that's where the 10 commandments came from, but really there were 600+ commandments. many punishable by death, some to be accounted to, made equal for, others were simply provisions, others only judgment to be made. now i suggest you go through exodus through to deuteronomy and read them all, to find out what is the perfect law required by god to us. now you can determine from the christian greek scriptures (NT) that the mosaic law was replaced in and by Jesus, and his two commands were "love you god *wholely*" and "love you neighbor as yourself" yet it says things detestable in gods eyes (will not inherit gods kingdom), lies are equal to fornication. personally i say lies are worser than murder. also to answer your question deception is a lie, and otherwise, The Bible says that misleading others is much worser than a lie and you will not inherit gods kingdom. now remember, god forgives freely those repent, and the end result for any unrepentant wicked one doing any level of 'sin' is that of Satan; to be cast into the fire (and destroyed permanantly) righteousness however is rewarded with everlasting life

Answer:

In the Bible, the definition of "sin" is: "...sin is the transgression of the law." (I John 3:4). And since "sin" entered the world through Adam, God's law has always been, as attested to by many passages in Genesis. They were just written down in Moses' day for us, today.

Understandably, while there are many laws, statutes and ordinances in the Bible, Paul clarifies what the "law" that defines "sin" is:

"...I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known LUST, except THE LAW HAD SAID, Thou shalt not covet." (Rom.7:7)

It's the Ten Commandments that defines what "sin" is. Coveting is one of the Ten.

With God, there are no "degrees" of sinning. Deceiving someone is lying to them and punishable by death.

Jesus Christ brought to light the "spiritual" aspect of the law and magnified it as being more than the "act" of transgression... but the "spiritual intent" of committing the transgression.

By the time someone is "deceived"... the act has been committed. The deceiver should have "rejected" the impulse, the spiritual thought to lie, first. Denying the transgression by arguing "degree" of the sin is spiritual blindness, resulting from "self-deception."

The Ten Commandments (the law that defines sin) is called "righteousness" in Psalms 119:172.

While the breaking of the Ten Commandments defines "sin"... it is the keeping of them that defines "righteousness." Jesus summarized them as "love." Love for God, and love for one another.

Lying and deception is the same thing with God. They are the transgression of the ninth Commandment. They are works of unrighteousness, and they are disrespectful to God and fellowman.

There are no degrees of unrighteousness.

What is the difference between denial and lie?

There is none. To deny the truth is to lie and live it! Living a lie is denial and the state denial and living a lie is synonymous with telling a lie. Perhaps the only real difference is in the motive. To deny the truth can be motivated by a desire to avoid the harshness of the truth but still requires deception. While to lie maybe the consequence of denial and or intentional deception. To deny something often requires the omission of the truth while to lie is to to deny or contradict the truth. But a lie by omission is still a lie!

What is Self-Deception and who when and how is it done?

Self deception is a mindset brought on by a long term perpetuated lie or lies. A person who consistantly tells the same untruth will eventually begin to believe it themself. More metaphorically speaking, self deception could be taken to mean "youre kidding yourself" (E.g "you'll never do that, who are you kidding?")

Is it ethical for a researcher to lie to a test subject?

Deception is a very common, and necessary, practice in research. All institutions must have a Human Subjects Review Board (HSRB) to evaluate an experiment and assess whether the deception in the experiment is within a reasonable realm based on certain criteria. Without deception in research, it would be impossible to get the necessary data. Also, a participant must be debriefed as to what the deception was after the experiment.
