It can be a bit confusing, but hopefully this will clear it up:

The Apple iPad models are as follows-

iPad (the first iPad model, also referred to as "iPad 1")

iPad 2 (the second iPad model)

The New iPad (the third iPad model, also referred to as "iPad 3" or "3rd Gen iPad")

iPad Mini (a miniature version of the iPad 2)

iPad with Retina display (the forth iPad or, as you called it, "iPad 4")

The distinction between the "iPad 3" and "iPad 4" is sometimes unclear, as the "iPad 3" is called "The New iPad", even though it is no longer new. Additionally, the "iPad 3" and "iPad 4" both have Retina displays, though only the "iPad 4" is called "iPad with Retina Display". The way to tell them apart is by looking at the bottom of the device where the connection port is located. The first, second and third iPads all possess a wide port which is used with the older 30 pin connection cord. iPad Mini and "iPad 4" both possess a smaller port which is used with the new Lightning Connector.
