Mary Cassatt came from The US to aris to become a painter. She got aquainted with Edgar Degas and the other impressionists. Their way of painting had an impact on her, but since only painted people, her style cannot be called purely impressionistic. Realistic pictures influenced by the impressionists.
Looking at the painting today one may wonder how it is Impressionistic, but most authorities agree it is 'Burial at Ornans' by Gustave Courbet, as well as his series of storms at sea that paved the way for the Impressionists. Courbet (1819-1977) worked in the style of Realism and is considered a leader in the movement.
