Vincent Van Gogh did, but he was not an impressionist. No famous impressionist has done this.

Vincent van gogh
That would be Vincent Van Gogh, according to legend. However, there is no evidence that he actually cut his own ear off. In fact, in recent times there is new historic evidence that suggests that it was cut off in an argument by a French artist called Paul Gauguin. See related link for the historian's new account.

That he did not cut it off, and he didn't do it for anybody else. I looked it up and it says, that he lost his ear when he got into a fight with his friend! So don't believe that stuff, that he cut off his own ear. Thats bull!
He got horribly angry and wanted to hurt someone. It is generally accepted that Vincent Van Gogh suffered from mental illness, and this is why he did irrational things such as cutting off his own ear. The story goes that on the night of 23 December 1888, Van Gogh cut off the lower half of his left ear (not the whole ear) and took it to a brothel, where he presented it to one of his prostitute friends. It has been speculated that one cause of this unusual behaviour was that it was the result of an argument with his painter friend Paul Gauguin, although that does not fully explain why he engage in such strange behaviour. Regardless of the reason, soon after this incident, van Gogh admitted himself to a mental institution. Two years later, suffering from severe depression, Van Gogh shot himself in the chest. However, it is also thought that van Gogh perhaps suffered from tinnitis, ringing in the ear, and that this was an attempt to rid himself of that.
It is believed that Vincent Van Gogh cut his own ear, though some believe that it might have been fellow artist, Paul Gauguin.

No, Edgar Allan Poe did not cut his ear off. This is a misconception often confused with the painter Vincent van Gogh, who did cut off a portion of his own ear. Poe's cause of death is still a mystery and theories range from alcohol poisoning to rabies.
