The use of the Navajo language was what the codes for Fidelis program involved. The program was part of the effort by the Marine Corps of the United States of America to win the war in the Pacific against Japan. The term 'fidelis' referred to the Marine motto, 'Semper fidelis', which means 'Always faithful' to the U.S., its government, and its people. The term 'codes' referred to the Marine effort to come up with an unbreakable language for communicating vital information. During World War II, the Japanese made code breaking a priority. They succeeded in breaking all but one of the U.S. miliary codes. That one unbreakable code was used by Navajo language speakers in the critical war years, 1942-1945.
