multi-party system
A third party is generally more likely to be an opposition party, as they often emerge to challenge the dominant two-party system and present alternative viewpoints or policies. In many political systems, third parties struggle to gain power due to electoral structures that favor larger parties. However, in some cases, third parties can gain significant influence, potentially forming coalitions or impacting legislation, but they are less likely to hold power outright compared to established parties.
Without political parties, the political process would likely be more fragmented and chaotic, as individuals would compete for power based solely on personal ideologies rather than party platforms. This could lead to a greater diversity of viewpoints but might also result in difficulty in forming coalitions or achieving consensus on legislation. Additionally, voters might find it harder to make informed decisions without the party labels that simplify candidates' positions, potentially leading to increased voter apathy and disengagement. Overall, the lack of political parties could create a less organized and more unpredictable political landscape.

There are several factors which have caused the large number of political parties in Indonesia. Firstly, some parties are based on particular sections of society, and thus several parties have emerged that represent these sections of society. Secondly, Indonesia is a relatively new democracy, and hence there was much excitement post-1998 about creating and joining political parties. There has also been less time for particular parties to consolidate and become more powerful. Thirdly, political parties are the only way to get into parliament or to become President, so a number of powerful figures have created their own political parties to seek more political power. And Lastly, but most importantly, Indonesia has a Proportional Representation (PR) electoral system, which presents lower barriers for parties to gain seats than Single Member District (SMD) electoral systems. If Indonesia used SMD then there would likely be a significant reduction in the number of parties.
