Andrew johnson
Johnson was a member of the National Union Party when he was elected vice-president. Before that and afterward, he was a Democrat.
Democrat, I think
Andrew Johnson was a part of the Democratic Political party. He was in office as president from April 15, 1865, until March 4, 1869.
He tried to run in 1868, but lost the party nomination.
Andrew Johnson replaced Hannibal Hamlin on Abraham Lincoln's second election ticket because Lincoln believed there was a political advantage to be gained. Johnson was supported by the War Democrats (became the National Union Party) and broadened Lincoln's base of support. Lincoln also considered Tennessee-native Johnson would be useful during the anticipated Reconstruction of the South.
His term as president expired and he was not nominated to run for another term. Johnson was chosen by Lincoln to be his vice-president in order to balance the ticket. He was from Tennessee which seceded from the union, so Johnson had no solid political base in the North. He became president when Lincoln died but was never popular with the Republican party bosses. He had some support in the Democratic party but not enough to get the nomination.
Andrew Johnson and Ronald Reagan both went from being Democrats to being Republicans. Johnson later switched back to be a Democrat. President-elect Trump contributed money to both parties but was not an active party member.
Andrew Johnson served less than 1 term in office, as US President. Johnson was never elected to office as President; the term he served, was the balance of President Lincoln's term, when he became President after President Lincoln was assassinated. President Johnson impeached during his 1 term as President, and was the first US President to be impeached. There were two attempts to impeach him, the second attempt was successful, and though he was impeached, he was not removed from office. (The Senate did not successfully vote to confirm the impeachment charges.) Johnson wanted to run for a second term as President but was not nominated by the Democratic party for President.
Andrew Johnson was US President from 1865 until March 1869. He became the 17th president when Lincoln was killed . Andrew Johnson was elected as vice president with Lincoln in 1864. He was US senator from Tennessee when Tennessee seceded and he was the only Senator from a seceding state that remained loyal to the union. Lincoln appointed him military governor of Tennessee after Tennessee was recaptured by the union. Johnson was known as a failure as a Reconstruction Era president. He was distrusted because he was from the South and had no status in the majority Republican Party. He was undermined by his cabinet which he inherited from Lincoln and which he was not allowed to replace by an unconstitutional law passed by an antagonistic Congress. After Lincoln died, several of the cabinet members took charge of the country and they did not want to give up their power. Therefore, Johnson was one of the least effective presidents of United States and was almost impeached and removed from office for purely political reasons.
Andrew Johnson was a Democrat before and after he was elected vice-president as a Republican. When parties were just starting to form. John C. Calhoun who was the vice-president under John Quincy Adams was elected again to serve under Andrew Jackson. Calhoun and Jackson never joined the same party. Similarly John Adams and his vice president Thomas Jefferson were not about to join same the party.
