You can use nearly any aquatic plant you can think of with a betta. Your selection will be more limited by the lighting you have as opposed to plants that will be compatible with a betta.

If you're new to plants in a tank I would recommend java fern and/or java moss. Both will grow well under low light conditions and are very easy to care for.

Can fish survive in fish bowls with no plants?

Fish should not live in bowls with the exception of a betta fish that can live in a 2.5 gallon to 5 gallon tank size. Bowls are just too small and are best used to just grow a few small plants inside.

How long does it take for a betta to get used to a 20 gallon tank with other fish?

The answer to that is that the Betta may never get used to it. In their native environment it's not uncommon for them to almost never see another fish except to breed. Sometimes they will do fine in a community setup, but generally, this is too much space for them and the other fish seem to make them nervous. A male Betta is usually best housed in his own special home of at least 5 gallons.

Can Betta fish be overwhelmed by scenery?

With anything new to it's environment, a betta fish will be cautious of anything new to it's tank (this is because of their territorial traits). But depending on the betta, it will take a day or so for it to get used to the props/scenery. But don't be surprised if the betta stays clear of a certain area, he/she may not know if it is safe or not.

Do Betta Fish learn how to fight better?

Actually, I used to have a Betta Fish... but then it died. If you put a mirror up to them... then they'll start to puff up... and show their fighting technique. I guess that the more you do this the better they'll get.

Do betta fish really eat other fish?

Oh, dude, betta fish can be pretty territorial and aggressive, especially the males. They might snack on some smaller fish if they get the chance, but it's not like they're swimming around looking for a seafood buffet. Just make sure you don't throw a bunch of fish together and hope for the best. Like, that's just asking for trouble, man.

What kind of water do betta fish use?

You should use tap water or bottled water. If you are using tap or bottled water, make sure you buy a bottle of Water Air Contitioner for the Betta. Make sure it says: Betta Water Conditoner, or on the bottle it says it can be used on all kinds of fish. Also, at Petco, they have a gallon of something called Betta Water. You won't need any chemicals for this, they made this water safe for the Betta. Thinking about buying a Betta Fighting Fish or need the right supplies for it? Here is the list of supplies that you will need: -A GLASS bowl. [Plastic bowls might have harmful chemicals] -Betta Water Conditioner [Or a water conditoner that can be used for any kind fish] -Betta Fish Food -Rocks for the bowl -1 or more plants [Betta's love plants to hide in] - A sponge to clean out the Betta bowl [Clean it twice a week] -If you want, you could buy a net IF YOU want to. You could put him in a cup, too. This is about everything you need. By the way, you shouldn't put a Betta male and female together UNLESS its their breeding period. Otherwise, the male might damage the female because males are much larger then the females. NEVER put the same sex [male&male/female&female] together, because they WILL fight. The water should not be allowed to drop below 18 degrees C.
