In 1920 Edvard Munch was dying from the Spanish Influenza that had already killed his parents. Carlisle Cullen was working as a doctor at the time, and was lonely. He tried the change on Edvard first, then on Esme. Which doesn't make any sense. In the movie Esme was also dying of Spanish Influenza, but in the book she jumped off a cliff after her baby died. Answer 2: Edvard Munch died in 1944, not 1920!
