Some say the papacy began in 30 C.E. upon the declaration by Jesus Christ that Simon Bar-Jona would be called Peter (rock) upon which the Catholic Church was to be built. He went on to serve for 37 years. Some say Peter became pope in 32 C.E. and was pope for only 35 years. Documentation of such things were not considered important at the time. Either way Peter served longest. Second longest is Pope Pius IX was pope for 31 years, 7 months and 23 days (11,560 days) from 1846-1878 Pope John Paul II is third longest with 26 years, 5 months and 18 days (9,666 days) from 1978 to 2005.
